The Importance of Exercise and Balance for Older Adults

Results from our 10-week Falls Prevention Program

Did you know?

Falls are the leading cause of hospitalisation and injury deaths for older adults (over 65) in Australia, making up to 77% of all injury hospitalisations, and 71% of injury deaths in older adults (AIHW, 2022).

Our 10-week Falls Prevention Program

CURA In-Home Care reached out to us, asking to run a 10-week Group Falls Prevention Program for its members. We individually assessed 5 participants (average age of 82) prior to starting the program, and at the end of the program. Tests included:

  1. Balance: How long participants could stand on one leg.
  2. Lower limb strength: How many times participants could sit on a chair and stand up in 30 seconds.
  3. Flexibility: How far participants can reach down towards/or past their toes.
  4. Agility/mobility: How quickly participants can stand walk up and around a 3-meter cone, turn around and sit back down.

Results from our 10-week Program

After completion of the 10-week program, participants showed impressive improvements in their results and improved in all aspects and areas that are crucial for falls prevention.

Compared to their baselines results:

  • Balance increased by 83%
  • Lower limb strength increased by 39%
  • Flexibility increased by 18%
  • Agility and mobility increased by 41%

Not only did the program show physical benefits, and improved confidence, but it helped participants feel socially connected in a fun, friendly group setting.

The success of the 10-week Falls Prevention Program shows that it is never too late to take action to improve your physical health, balance, and wellbeing.
